FOTD and New Coffee Lippies Listed at Dayna's Minerals- and a review on Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars

I did swatches of the new coffee based Lippies and posted swatches over at Dayna's Minerals Blog�  I know I have totally neglected that blog and I am making it a summer project to get things updated over there.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I bought some Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars to try to help DD with her frizzy hair issues. I have tried using three of them myself and thought I'd do a little review of how they work on fine hair like my own.

Cafe Moreno Shampoo Bar
Moreno is the Spanish word for  brunette.  Brunettes have been pouring fresh brewed coffee on their hair for centuries to helptransform flat brown tones to into shiny, rich color and maybe even do away with some of those pesky gray strands.  Made with cloves, to enhance warm tones, and quadruple strength fresh brewed coffee, which enriches brown hues and provides astringent benefits to your scalp, this shampoo is natural way of brightening dull brown hair.  Olive oil, rich in oleic acid, promotes full-bodied hair and a healthy scalp.  Rice bran contains proteins that may help strengthen the hair shaft and prevent split ends.  It adds sheen and manageability while moisturizing and conditioning.  Emollient rich, nourishing babassu oilmoisturizes and restores hair strength and elasticity, for shiny, healthy-looking hair.   Made with 20% unrefined shea butter which absorbs quickly into the scalp to provide deep nourishment for the hair shaft, as it moisturizes and softens dry, dull, or damaged hair; resulting in improved luster and manageability.   The natural oil from the coffee beans adds luster to dry hair and studies done at a university in Germany suggest that caffeine promotes hair growth.  The warm sensuous essential oil blend of clove, lavender, patchouli and ylang ylang blend nicely with a hint of coffee, promotes the natural moisture balance, and is beneficial for dry and damaged hair

Ingredients: Saponified oils of clove infused olive, babassu, coconut, castor bean, unrefined shea butter, rice bran, and expeller pressed canola; brewed coffee; essential oils of clove, patchouli, ylang ylang, and lavender; vitamin E oil; and rosemary oil extract.

My take--- I love the clove smell but could do without the patchouli personally. I've always hated patchouli because it reminds me of college. I was working as a waitress in a restaurant/micro-brewery and a lot of the workers there were "Dead Heads" and many of them wore patchouli--- which to me just smells like bad dirt. To make the association even more unappealing these "Dead Heads" for the most part came from this affluent suburb- so their whole smelling like dirt and trying to be a rebel because mommy and daddy have money didn't appeal to me. LOL Back to the review on the actually shampoo bar. I did enjoy the lather and like I said, the clove covered most of the patchouli so I wasn't too offended by the smell. I then rinsed very well with apple cider vinegar. My hair had a strange feel-- kind of greasy but "squeaky clean" at the same time. What I found is that my fine hair looked greasy when dry using just this shampoo bar and ACV. The next time I used this bar, ACV rinse and then a small amount of Wen Mint Cleansing Conditioner. With this combo my hair is not greasy but it kind of defeats the purpose of shampoo bar if I have to use Wen to "cleanse" my hair because the shampoo bar is too emollient for my very fine hair. I've had my daughter using this one for her hair and I do notice that her hair isn't as frizzy. Her routine is Cafe Moreno, ACV rinse, a small amount of Wen for conditioning, and then tiny amount of shea butter on hair while still wet. It does seem to tame much of the frizz for her.

Nettle Shampoo Bar
We created this special balancing shampoo bar with everything that is great for your hair.  Cedarwood essential oil is believed to darken graying hair, help dandruff, and minimize hair loss.  Some men claim it even promotes hair growth (wouldn’t that be nice!).  Rosemary is believed to be one of the best oils to stimulate hair growth, diminish hair loss, eradicate dandruff and add luster to dull hair.  The combination of nettle, rosemary and comfrey infused oil, and nettle and rosemary tea are believed to encourage scalp circulation, enrich lifeless hair, and soothe the scalp.  Our super conditioning shampoo bar contains exotic butters and hair loving oils that produce a rich, thick lather to leave your hair clean and shiny without being stripped of its natural oils.

Ingredients: Saponified oils of an organic nettle, comfrey, rosemary, fenugreek, spirulina, and horsetail infused olive, castor bean, avocado, and rice bran blend; coconut, virgin hemp seed, palm, jojoba, unrefined shea butter, avocado butter, and wheat germ; organic nettle leaf and rosemary infused filtered rainwater; organic aloe; organic fenugreek, horsetail and spirulina; essential oils of basil, rosemary and cedarwood; vitamin E oil; and rosemary oil extract.

 


My take-- this one is a better fit for my fine hair. It doesn't suds up like Cafe Moreno but I prefer this one's smell-- a bit like licorice which I like-- but more earthy- it's not as scented as Cafe Moreno. I can use this shampoo bar and just ACV rinse without getting that "greasy" feel although I still prefer using it with a bit of Wen after rinsing. 

I tried the Honey, Beer and Egg one also but found this one similar in performance as Cafe Moreno without a spicy clove smell. I am going to give the rest of this one to my DD- maybe the proteins in this one will help with her frizzy hair issue? 

I can see an improvement in DD's hair since using shampoo bars so there's no regret on my part for purchasing. I like using the Nettle one on my own hair-- maybe not daily but a few times  of week for sure.

Sorry that the shampoo bars didn't work as well as you hoped... I know what you mean about the "greasy" or waxy feel -- the different bars do give really different results! I was surprised because the range isn't nearly so large with conventional liquid shampoos.

I'd guess the diameter of my hair is at least 1/2 of DD's so it wasn't a huge surprise that something that works for her doesn't for me. I'll still use the nettle bar because it does seem to work with my hair. I like the thought of using something a bit more cleansing than Wen once in a while and the Nettle bar may fill the bill.
I do think they have helped DD- that's the reason I ordered in the first place.

Is Empress´ New Clothes one of your own shades? It´s very pretty on you. Looking forward to the updated Dayna´s Minerals Blog. I´m itching to order more of your stuff but I haven´t decided which foundation shade suits me best. lol

Empress' New Clothes is my duplicate of a BE color called Bare Skin. It's a really pretty rosy brown and I tend to bring it out in summer because it's so easy to get a great look out of it. It's also a great blush color and I've been known to dip lip balm into it and use as lip color too.
